Eiffel Tower History
The history of the Eiffel Tower began in 1887. After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, Paris struggled with a weakened economy and social hardship. To recover, France looked for ways to inspire progress, create jobs, and restore national pride. The idea of building an extraordinary monument soon became part of this revival.
Why organize a World’s Fair?
Paris had successfully hosted earlier expositions, so the French government decided to organize another World’s Fair in 1889 to celebrate progress and innovation. The Eiffel Tower became the centerpiece of the exhibition, attracting millions of visitors from around the world and immediately turning into the symbol of Paris.
Why was the Eiffel Tower built?
The Eiffel Tower was inaugurated in 1889 during the Universal Exposition. After the humiliation of the 1870 occupation, France wanted to demonstrate its resilience, creativity, and industrial power. The exposition was the perfect occasion to showcase French engineering. A design competition was launched, and Gustave Eiffel’s project stood out as the winning masterpiece.
The Construction of the Eiffel Tower
A total of 107 projects were submitted. The winning design came from the Gustave Eiffel Company, led by Gustave Eiffel himself with the collaboration of engineers Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier, and architect Stephen Sauvestre. Their bold idea combined strength, elegance, and cutting-edge technology, resulting in a monument that revolutionized 19th-century architecture.
